Regional vision
Systém racionálneho využívania krajiny založený na princípoch obehového biohospodárstva.
Status of implementation of the bioeconomy
Žilina region has near zero circular bioeconomy maturity because it has neither a Regional Bioeconomy Management Framework nor a Regional Circular Economy Strategy but the bio-based potential of the region is strong.
In accordance with the Social and economic development plan 2021+, the Žilina Region plans to implement the principles of circular economy and prepare to achieve the goals of the European Union.
- Implementation of circular economy principles in the region
- Involvement of the region in innovative projects in the field of circular economy
- Incorporation of circular economy principles into regional public procurement
- Support for building a network of product reuse centers in the region
In the framework of ROBIN project, RAZSK and PEDAL plan to collaborate closely with the Slovak Bioeconomy Cluster, which its main objective is to promote cooperation, networking, innovation and mutual exchange of information between cluster members and other stakeholders in agri-food and bio-based sectors.
Bioeconomy related challenges
- Lack of bio/circular strategies
- No engagement of local bioeconomy stakeholders
What ROBIN brings
- Tailored bioeconomy governance models / structures
- Engagement of relevant stakeholder in design
Feedstocks
The main biomass producers in the Slovak Republic for energy use are forestry, agriculture and wood-processing industries. According to OECD data, the Slovak Republic has been logging more wood, more intensively and with lower value added than other OECD and V4 (Visegrad Group) countries. With a few exceptions, the volumes of wood salvaged from natural losses (salvage fellings) consistently represent more than half of total fellings (actual logging) and have continuously increased since 2000, in line with planned logging that increases on average by 4% annually. The use of renewable resources in Slovakia is estimated to be very small compared to its potential.
The Žilina Region is the third largest region of the Slovak Republic by area and occupies 13.9% of the state’s area. Since agricultural plant and animal production is not very widespread in the Žilina Region, therefore, the energy potential is mainly represented by wood biomass. The Žilina region is characterized by very significant stocks of wood biomass, which also depends on the number of woodworking companies producing waste wood biomass (offcuts, sawdust, wood chips) suitable for energy purposes.
