Regional vision
Companies in Baden-Württemberg, especially small and medium-sized, become world market leaders in the bioeconomy sector and more innovative bioeconomic ideas are developed. For this, it is necessary to further develop suitable funding support schemes.
Status of implementation of the bioeconomy
Baden-Wuerttemberg has its own bioeconomy strategy (“The Baden-Wuerttemberg’s government’s sustainable bioeconomy strategy”, 2019) driven by the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection and the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Sector. In its advisory role, there is a regional bioeconomy council with experts from the region. The implementation of the strategy is supported by past and recent funding programmes, e.g. “Bioeconomy Innovation and Investment Programme for Rural Areas”, “Sustainable Bioeconomy as an Innovation Engine for Rural Areas” and “Network initiatives for the further development of the lead region Sustainable Bioeconomy Baden-Wuerttemberg”. The overall maturity of the bioeconomy and circular economy in the region is advanced and there are solid synergies established between bio- and circular economy.
STEINBEIS 2I has a wide portfolio of activities and experiences in the area of bio-based and circular economy implemented in diverse EU-funded projects (AgroforValor, EIP-Agriplus, FlashPhos and Fusilli, among others) and network at the regional level with several clusters (for example AFBW – Alliance Fibre-Based Materials Baden-Wuerttemberg e.V., Solar Cluster Baden-Wuerttemberg e.V. and Modell Hohenlohe e.V.).
Feedstocks
The most relevant biomass feedstocks in the area of Baden-Wuerttemberg are wood, lignin, lignocellulose, bio-waste, agricultural byproducts (e.g. from harvest or digestates) and insects.
